India has supported a United Nations Security Council resolution condemning Iranian strikes on several Gulf nations as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East following recent military developments in the region. The resolution was adopted by the fifteen member United Nations Security Council with thirteen countries voting in favour while China and Russia abstained from the vote.
The resolution identified as Resolution 2817 of the year 2026 criticised Iran for launching strikes against multiple countries in the Gulf region. According to the document the attacks targeted Bahrain Kuwait Oman Qatar Saudi Arabia the United Arab Emirates and Jordan. The resolution also expressed concern about the impact of such actions on regional stability and international peace.
The Security Council strongly condemned the attacks and raised concerns about strikes on residential areas and civilian infrastructure. The resolution called for an immediate halt to such actions and urged all parties to avoid activities that could further escalate tensions in the region.
Another key aspect of the resolution addressed the security of maritime trade routes in the Middle East. The council urged Iran to stop actions that could interfere with international shipping and commercial activities in important sea lanes. The resolution also mentioned concerns regarding support for armed groups operating in the region.
India joined nearly one hundred and forty member states in supporting the resolution during the wider diplomatic process at the United Nations. Indian representatives have repeatedly emphasised the importance of maintaining peace stability and open trade routes in the Middle East because the region is vital for global energy supply and international commerce.
Iran however strongly criticised the resolution after its adoption. The representative of Iran at the United Nations described the decision as unfair and said it represented what he called a serious setback for the credibility of the Security Council. Iran maintained that the resolution did not reflect its perspective on the events and rejected the accusations mentioned in the document.
Representatives of several Gulf countries welcomed the adoption of the resolution and said it sent a clear message from the international community regarding the importance of protecting civilians and maintaining regional stability. Diplomatic representatives from Bahrain stated that the global community had shown unity in condemning what they described as hostile actions.
Israel also welcomed the condemnation of attacks on civilian areas and emphasised that targeting cities and civilian populations is unacceptable under international law. The statement highlighted the importance of protecting civilian lives during conflicts.
The Middle East has been experiencing heightened tensions in recent weeks following military operations and retaliatory actions among various regional actors. The developments have attracted attention from the international community because of the potential impact on global security and energy markets.
Diplomatic observers say that resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council aim to encourage restraint and promote dialogue among countries involved in conflicts. While such resolutions do not always immediately resolve disputes they are intended to create international pressure and encourage negotiations.
India has consistently called for peaceful solutions to international conflicts and has supported diplomatic efforts through multilateral organisations such as the United Nations. By supporting the resolution India reaffirmed its position in favour of regional stability and respect for international law.
