New Delhi: India has formally urged Bangladesh to expedite the process of verifying individuals listed for deportation during a recent round of bilateral talks focused on immigration, border management, and regional security. The request reflects India’s growing concern over the prolonged stay of undocumented migrants and the need for effective cross-border coordination to address the issue.
The matter was raised during high-level diplomatic discussions held between Indian and Bangladeshi officials, where immigration and border security remained key agenda items. India has submitted several lists in recent years, identifying individuals who are reportedly Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally within Indian territory. The verification of these individuals by Bangladeshi authorities is necessary before deportation can be carried out.
Indian officials conveyed that the slow pace of verification is causing administrative challenges and delaying deportation proceedings. They emphasized the importance of timely cooperation in dealing with migration-related concerns that affect law enforcement, border security, and community relations in both countries.
“India has requested that Bangladesh expedite the process of verifying the nationality of individuals listed for deportation,” said an official familiar with the matter. “Faster verification will help both countries address the issue of undocumented migration in a structured and lawful manner.”
Bangladesh, in response, acknowledged India’s concerns and reaffirmed its commitment to working with Indian authorities on all pending cases. Bangladeshi representatives assured that they will prioritize review of the lists and enhance internal coordination to improve turnaround times for verification.
The discussions are part of an ongoing bilateral framework aimed at maintaining peaceful and cooperative ties along the Indo-Bangladesh border. Both countries share over 4,000 kilometers of porous borders, which have historically witnessed challenges including illegal migration, smuggling, and trafficking.
India has consistently maintained that it respects the human rights of migrants and aims to ensure that deportation processes are conducted in accordance with international norms. However, the government has also reiterated its stance that illegal immigration must be addressed through lawful mechanisms and bilateral cooperation.
The talks also included discussions on improving border infrastructure, sharing intelligence, and conducting joint patrolling exercises. Officials from both sides expressed satisfaction with the current level of cooperation but agreed on the need for greater efficiency in managing shared concerns such as undocumented migration.
Strategic analysts view the renewed dialogue on deportation verification as a positive step toward enhancing trust and operational efficiency between India and Bangladesh. They note that successful coordination in immigration matters can contribute to broader regional stability.
Both nations concluded the meeting with a joint commitment to deepen their cooperation on immigration and security issues and to hold regular reviews to monitor progress.
As the verification process gains momentum, India hopes that timely action by Bangladesh will allow for a smoother implementation of its deportation policy and reinforce the shared goal of orderly and legal cross-border movement.
