With focused efforts and policy support, the Army aims to eliminate all remaining dependence on imported ammunition within the next few months.

In a significant step towards enhancing national security and reducing dependency on foreign imports, the Indian Army has announced that it is on track to achieve complete self-reliance in ammunition manufacturing by 2025. This move aligns with the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and marks a major milestone in the country’s defence preparedness and industrial growth.

According to senior defence officials, the Indian Army currently sources a considerable portion of its ammunition from domestic manufacturers, but a small yet critical percentage is still imported due to technological or capacity limitations. With focused efforts and policy support, the Army aims to eliminate all remaining dependence on imported ammunition within the next few months.

The plan involves expanding partnerships with Indian private sector firms and enhancing the capabilities of the public sector undertakings (PSUs) involved in defence production. Ammunition types that are now being produced domestically include high-calibre artillery shells, tank ammunition, small arms cartridges, and specialist explosive devices.

The Indian Army has collaborated closely with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ordnance Factory Board (now part of Advanced Weapons and Equipment India Ltd and Munitions India Ltd), and private manufacturers to speed up the production of ammunition that meets global standards. Officials said this transition is not just about quantity but also quality, with rigorous testing and approval protocols in place.

A senior Army official stated, “The goal is not just to meet our internal needs but also to establish India as a key supplier of defence ammunition to friendly foreign countries. Indigenous manufacturing will help reduce logistical delays, ensure reliable supply chains during emergencies, and also save valuable foreign exchange.”

In recent years, several reforms have been introduced to encourage private sector participation in the defence sector, including simplified licensing, technology transfer from DRDO, and the creation of a dedicated defence manufacturing corridor. These measures have significantly boosted investor confidence and accelerated development timelines.

The push for self-reliance has already shown positive results. For example, India has started producing advanced tank shells and guided artillery ammunition domestically. The indigenous production of critical inputs such as propellants and fuzes has also been strengthened, reducing reliance on imported components.

Industry experts believe that this shift will not only strengthen India’s national security posture but also help generate employment, promote innovation, and contribute to economic growth. The Ministry of Defence has reiterated that it remains committed to supporting the Indian Army in its mission to become fully self-reliant in ammunition manufacturing by 2025.

With continued focus, investment, and collaboration, India is poised to become a global player in defence manufacturing, achieving both strategic independence and economic resilience in the sector.
