External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has reaffirmed India's commitment to strengthening its ties with the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). Speaking at a recent event, Jaishankar emphasized the significance of regional cooperation in addressing shared challenges and fostering economic growth among member nations.

The minister highlighted that BIMSTEC, comprising seven member countries—Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand—plays a crucial role in promoting collaboration in various sectors such as trade, connectivity, and security. He noted that enhancing connectivity between these nations is vital for achieving collective development and addressing issues such as climate change and security concerns.

Jaishankar also reiterated India's proactive approach in initiating dialogues and participating in projects aimed at strengthening the BIMSTEC framework. He stressed the importance of mutual support and collaboration, particularly in the context of post-pandemic recovery, urging member countries to work together to realize the full potential of the regional grouping.

The minister's remarks come as India aims to bolster its engagement with BIMSTEC, recognizing it as a key platform for regional integration and cooperation. By fostering closer ties, India seeks to enhance trade relations, improve infrastructure connectivity, and promote people-to-people interactions among the member states.

As the regional dynamics continue to evolve, India’s commitment to BIMSTEC is seen as a strategic move to counterbalance influences from other powers in the Indo-Pacific region. The government's focus on strengthening these ties reflects its broader vision of fostering stability, prosperity, and cooperation in the region.

The call for enhanced engagement with BIMSTEC nations underscores India's dedication to playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of regional cooperation, promoting peace, and ensuring sustainable development across the Bay of Bengal region.
