Delhi NCR has been grappling with a severe pollution crisis, with air quality indices consistently reaching unhealthy and hazardous levels, particularly during the winter months.

Amid the ongoing air pollution crisis in Delhi NCR, renowned Senior Advocates Kabil Sibal and Tushar Mehta have written to the authorities, requesting the continuation of virtual court proceedings. The duo expressed grave concerns about the deteriorating air quality, which has reached hazardous levels, making it challenging and unsafe for individuals to commute to physical courtrooms.

Delhi NCR has been grappling with a severe pollution crisis, with air quality indices consistently reaching unhealthy and hazardous levels, particularly during the winter months. Both Sibal and Mehta pointed out that these conditions pose a significant risk to public health, especially for those with respiratory issues, elderly individuals, and children.

In their letter, the advocates emphasized that the virtual mode of hearings should be continued to ensure that justice is not delayed due to the difficulties caused by the pollution. They argued that the shift to virtual hearings during the pandemic had been effective in maintaining legal proceedings and ensuring access to justice while safeguarding public health.

The request comes at a time when air pollution levels in Delhi NCR have skyrocketed, with the AQI (Air Quality Index) often breaching the 400-mark, indicating severe pollution. Respiratory diseases have seen a sharp rise, and experts have warned that prolonged exposure to such poor air quality can lead to long-term health complications.

While the judicial system in India is gradually resuming physical hearings, advocates like Sibal and Mehta are urging the authorities to consider the health risks posed by the ongoing environmental crisis. They argue that virtual proceedings could be a sustainable solution during such critical times, reducing the strain on public transportation and minimizing the risk of exposure to pollutants.

This request reflects growing concerns over the impact of environmental issues on daily life and the legal system. As the pollution crisis continues, it remains to be seen whether the judiciary will heed the call for virtual hearings or explore other measures to ensure the safety and convenience of citizens.
