In the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal has suggested that Prime Minister Narendra Modi convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the security implications of the attack and the overall situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, which targeted a group of tourists in the popular Pahalgam area, resulted in casualties and raised concerns about the safety of visitors to the region.
Kapil Sibal, addressing the media, emphasized the need for a parliamentary debate on the issue. “The attack in Pahalgam is deeply troubling, and it highlights the need for a thorough discussion on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The government must take immediate steps to reassure both locals and tourists. I urge the Prime Minister to call for a special session of Parliament to address these concerns,” Sibal said.
The Congress leader expressed that the incident is not just an attack on tourists but also a significant setback for the region’s tourism industry, which is vital to the local economy. He suggested that the government's response to such attacks must be part of a broader conversation that includes national security measures, tourism policies, and the restoration of normalcy in the Valley.
Sibal also called for a detailed investigation into the attack, with the aim of holding those responsible accountable. "A serious investigation must be launched, and the government must ensure that justice is served. We cannot allow such incidents to continue," he added.
The suggestion has sparked a political debate, with leaders from various parties weighing in on the issue. While many have supported Sibal's call for a detailed parliamentary discussion, others have pointed out that national security issues have often been sidelined for political gain. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) responded by emphasizing the government's commitment to safeguarding the region and its people. "The safety of citizens and tourists remains a top priority, and the government is taking all necessary measures," said a BJP spokesperson.
As the situation in Kashmir remains tense, the demand for increased security measures has gained momentum. Security forces have been deployed in greater numbers across sensitive areas, and authorities are continuing their efforts to maintain peace.
The call for a special session underscores the urgency of addressing not only the immediate security concerns but also the broader challenges of restoring peace and rebuilding confidence in Kashmir.
