Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has strongly criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly promoting what he termed as ‘slum tourism.’ Kejriwal accused BJP leaders of exploiting the poor in Delhi to score political points, particularly in the run-up to the crucial elections.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader’s comments came after BJP leaders were seen visiting slum areas during their election campaigns, a move that Kejriwal argued was an attempt to portray themselves as empathetic while doing little for the slum dwellers' real needs. Kejriwal claimed that the BJP was using slums for political symbolism without addressing the longstanding issues such as poor living conditions, lack of proper sanitation, and inadequate public services.

The issue of slum development has been a hot topic in Delhi’s political landscape, with both the AAP and BJP accusing each other of failing to uplift the city’s most vulnerable populations. Kejriwal has also been vocal about his government's efforts to provide better healthcare, education, and infrastructure in these areas. He said that rather than using slums for photo-ops, the BJP should focus on meaningful development in these communities.

The remarks have sparked a political row, with BJP leaders defending their campaign and accusing Kejriwal of playing politics with the issues of the poor. As Delhi heads toward the elections, this debate over ‘slum tourism’ has added to the intense political discourse, highlighting the divide between the ruling AAP and the opposition BJP.

With the Delhi Assembly elections just around the corner, this issue is likely to be a focal point in the political battle, as both parties continue to vie for the support of Delhi’s electorate.
