The AAI plans to implement advanced training programs, including simulation-based learning, technology-driven modules, and scenario-based exercises to prepare controllers for the increasing complexity of air traffic.

New Delhi: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has unveiled plans for a comprehensive revamp of Air Traffic Control (ATC) infrastructure to meet the growing demands of India’s aviation sector. The initiative aims to double ATC capacity and train a future-ready workforce by 2030, aligning with global aviation standards and ensuring enhanced airspace management.

AAI officials said the project will include upgrading existing ATC towers, introducing state-of-the-art equipment, and integrating next-generation radar and communication systems. The infrastructure enhancement is expected to streamline flight operations, reduce delays, and improve overall safety and efficiency across India’s airspace.

A key focus of the revamp is the training and skill development of air traffic controllers. The AAI plans to implement advanced training programs, including simulation-based learning, technology-driven modules, and scenario-based exercises to prepare controllers for the increasing complexity of air traffic. By 2030, the authority aims to have a workforce capable of managing high-density air traffic with precision and safety.

The revamp also addresses the need for modernizing navigation and surveillance systems at airports across India. By deploying advanced technologies, the AAI expects to enhance situational awareness, reduce human error, and improve coordination between pilots and ground controllers. Officials noted that these upgrades are essential to meet the demands of a rapidly growing aviation market, projected to handle millions of passengers annually.

The initiative aligns with India’s broader aviation growth strategy, which includes expanding airport infrastructure, promoting regional connectivity, and implementing the Digital Sky initiative for efficient airspace management. Enhanced ATC capabilities are expected to support the country’s increasing number of domestic and international flights, while ensuring safety and timely operations.

AAI representatives emphasized that human resource development is as critical as infrastructure improvements. The organization is investing in recruitment, continuous professional development, and adoption of global best practices to ensure controllers are prepared for emerging challenges in aviation management.

The revamp is expected to have a transformative impact on India’s aviation industry, including improved passenger experience, reduced flight delays, and better coordination between airports and airlines. The project also reinforces India’s commitment to maintaining high safety standards and meeting the requirements of international aviation regulatory bodies.

As India’s aviation sector continues to expand rapidly, the AAI ATC modernization program aims to create a robust infrastructure and a skilled workforce capable of managing future air traffic demands. By 2030, India is expected to be among the leading countries in air traffic management efficiency and safety, thanks to this comprehensive initiative.
