Priyank Kanoongo, a prominent member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), visited a shelter home in Jahangirpuri, Delhi, to inspect the living conditions of its residents and ensure their human rights are being upheld. This visit is part of Kanoongo's ongoing efforts to assess and improve the welfare of individuals living in shelter homes across India.
The shelter home, which houses individuals from marginalized communities, provides essential services such as food, accommodation, healthcare, and rehabilitation support. During his visit, Kanoongo conducted a thorough inspection of the facilities, engaging with both the staff and residents to better understand their daily challenges. The NHRC member also held discussions with local authorities to address concerns about overcrowding, sanitation, and the overall quality of services provided.
Kanoongo emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of vulnerable populations, particularly in shelters, and urged authorities to implement necessary measures to improve living conditions and ensure the safety and dignity of residents. His visit was part of a broader initiative by the NHRC to monitor and advocate for the well-being of people in institutional care, including shelter homes, orphanages, and rehabilitation centers.
The NHRC member also directed local authorities to take immediate action on some of the key issues raised during his visit, including improving access to healthcare and ensuring that residents receive proper education and skill development opportunities.
Priyank Kanoongo’s visit underscores the NHRC’s commitment to safeguarding human rights at the grassroots level and ensuring that vulnerable individuals, including women, children, and the elderly, have access to basic human dignity and support.
