The Government of India is set to launch its landmark "One Nation, One Subscription" initiative on January 1, 2024, a groundbreaking step towards making educational and research resources more accessible. Through this program, students, researchers, and educational institutions will gain access to over 13,400 globally recognized journals, facilitating a knowledge revolution across the country.
With a targeted reach of 1.8 crore students and thousands of researchers, this initiative aims to remove the financial barriers that often limit access to high-quality academic publications. Previously, such resources were available only to a select few institutions or individuals who could afford expensive journal subscriptions. By centralizing subscriptions at a national level, the government plans to ensure equitable access for all.
Union Minister for Education and Skill Development, Dharmendra Pradhan, has emphasized the importance of this initiative in strengthening India's research ecosystem and empowering students to compete on a global stage. The initiative also aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which stresses the need for fostering a culture of research and innovation in the country.
The "One Nation, One Subscription" model is expected to bridge the gap between Indian academia and global research standards, encouraging more impactful contributions from Indian researchers. This initiative is seen as a significant investment in the country's intellectual capital and an effort to position India as a global leader in education and innovation.
As the program rolls out in 2024, it is expected to bring transformative changes to the educational landscape, paving the way for a more informed and empowered generation of learners.
