India has completed the evacuation of the final group of its citizens stranded in Sri Lanka as part of Operation Sagar Bandhu, following the widespread destruction caused by Cyclone Ditwah. The cyclone, which led to severe flooding, high winds, and extensive infrastructural damage, displaced thousands and created urgent humanitarian needs. The Indian government, through its Ministry of External Affairs, took swift measures to ensure the safety and repatriation of all stranded nationals.
Operation Sagar Bandhu involved coordinated efforts between Indian consular officials in Sri Lanka, local authorities, and government agencies. Evacuation flights and transport services were arranged to bring citizens safely back to India. Priority was given to vulnerable groups, including women, children, and elderly individuals, ensuring they received prompt assistance during transit. Safety protocols and COVID-19 guidelines were strictly adhered to throughout the operation.
Beyond repatriation, the Indian government intensified relief efforts for those affected in Sri Lanka. Food distribution, emergency medical aid, temporary shelters, and psychological support were provided to residents in the cyclone-hit areas. The operation also included coordination with local authorities to assess ongoing needs and provide continuous support to the affected population.
Officials highlighted that Operation Sagar Bandhu demonstrates India’s proactive approach to overseas emergencies. By maintaining strong diplomatic channels, consular readiness, and logistical preparedness, the government ensured a smooth evacuation process despite challenging weather and infrastructural conditions. Citizens stranded in remote areas were promptly contacted, and communication lines were kept open to provide guidance and updates on evacuation schedules.
The final batch of evacuees was brought to India safely, marking the successful conclusion of the operation. Health and safety checks were conducted upon arrival, and support was provided for onward travel to their home states. Government agencies emphasized that this operation reflects India’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad while fostering goodwill and collaboration with neighboring countries during times of crisis.
Experts note that Operation Sagar Bandhu sets a precedent for rapid response during international natural disasters. The integration of diplomatic coordination, logistics planning, and citizen welfare measures ensures efficient evacuation and relief operations. Lessons learned from this mission will inform future emergency preparedness and cross-border humanitarian responses.
The Indian government continues to monitor the situation in Sri Lanka, remaining in contact with authorities to provide any further assistance if required. Operation Sagar Bandhu has been widely appreciated for its effective management, timely execution, and citizen-focused approach, showcasing India’s capability in addressing overseas crises while prioritizing safety, relief, and rehabilitation efforts.
