New Delhi/Moscow: An Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft carrying a high-level delegation as part of the government’s Operation Sindoor mission was held in a holding pattern over Moscow airport for several hours due to an emergency security alert triggered by a suspected drone attack in the vicinity.
The delegation was part of an ongoing strategic engagement between India and Russia under Operation Sindoor, which focuses on bilateral defence cooperation and logistics. The incident occurred during the final leg of the flight, shortly before its scheduled landing at one of Moscow's international airports.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Russian aviation authorities had temporarily suspended landing operations at the airport due to the presence of unauthorized aerial activity believed to be drones. The Indian aircraft, following standard international aviation protocols, was instructed to remain airborne in a safe holding pattern until the threat was assessed and cleared.
No damage or injuries were reported, and the crew maintained continuous communication with air traffic control to ensure the safety of all onboard. After receiving clearance, the aircraft landed safely without further incident.
Indian Defence Ministry Acknowledges the Delay
The Ministry of Defence in New Delhi confirmed the delay and clarified that all personnel on board were safe. A spokesperson noted that precautionary measures were followed in full accordance with international norms and credited the coordination between Indian and Russian authorities for ensuring the security of the delegation.
“The delegation under Operation Sindoor has landed safely in Moscow. The delay was due to security-related aviation clearance. We thank the Russian authorities for their timely coordination,” the ministry said in a brief statement.
What Is Operation Sindoor?
Operation Sindoor is a strategic initiative by the Indian government aimed at enhancing defence ties with allied nations. The current mission to Russia includes senior defence officials, logistical experts, and technical staff, focusing on joint projects, training programs, and supply chain coordination.
The operation signifies India’s ongoing efforts to modernize its military infrastructure and strengthen international partnerships amid evolving global security dynamics.
Growing Concerns Over Drone Threats
This incident highlights the growing challenges posed by the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones near civilian and military infrastructure. In recent months, several European and Asian nations have reported increased drone activity near airports and defence facilities, leading to temporary closures and heightened security protocols.
Experts warn that drones present a serious threat to aviation safety and stress the need for better detection and counter-drone technologies at key transit points worldwide.
Conclusion
While the Operation Sindoor delegation’s delay in Moscow ended without any harm, the event underlines the unpredictable nature of modern security threats, particularly in global airspace. The incident also reaffirms the importance of international cooperation in aviation safety and defence coordination.
Indian authorities have assured that the mission’s objectives will proceed as planned, with further meetings and engagements scheduled in Moscow over the next few days.
