Anant Nag, known for maintaining a low profile despite his fame, dedicated the award to the Kannada film industry and to the people who have supported him over the years.

In a prestigious ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi earlier today, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Padma Bhushan award on two stalwarts from the field of Arts—Dr. Shobana Chandrakumar and veteran Kannada actor Anant Nag. The honour recognizes their decades-long contributions to Indian culture through classical dance and cinema, respectively.

Dr. Shobana Chandrakumar, widely known as Shobana, is a celebrated Bharatanatyam dancer, actress, and choreographer. She has played a pivotal role in promoting Indian classical dance across the world. Trained under the legendary Chitra Visweswaran and later with the Dhananjayans, Shobana has performed extensively both in India and abroad. In addition to her performances, she is also the founder of Kalarpana, a dance school that has trained hundreds of students in Bharatanatyam. Shobana has previously been honoured with the Padma Shri in 2006 for her contribution to the arts, and today’s recognition with the Padma Bhushan marks a further testament to her cultural legacy.

Veteran actor Anant Nag, who also received the Padma Bhushan today, has had a distinguished career spanning over five decades in Indian cinema. Known for his versatile acting and strong screen presence, Anant Nag has appeared in over 300 films, primarily in Kannada, but also in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, and Malayalam. His performances in films such as Minchina Ota, Benkiya Bale, and Malgudi Days have left an indelible mark on Indian cinema. His roles often combined artistic depth with popular appeal, making him a favourite among critics and audiences alike.

The Padma Awards, announced annually on the eve of Republic Day, are among India’s highest civilian honours. They are given in three categories—Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri—to recognize individuals for their distinguished service in various fields including art, literature, education, trade, public affairs, and social work. The awards aim to highlight and honour those who have made significant contributions to the country’s development and culture.

Today’s award ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including government officials, artists, and the families of the awardees. Both Shobana and Anant Nag expressed their gratitude upon receiving the honour. In her acceptance, Shobana emphasized the importance of preserving India’s rich classical traditions and passing them on to the next generation. Anant Nag, known for maintaining a low profile despite his fame, dedicated the award to the Kannada film industry and to the people who have supported him over the years.

These recognitions underscore the value of artistic excellence in shaping the cultural identity of the nation. With their lifelong dedication and unmatched contributions, both Dr. Shobana Chandrakumar and Anant Nag continue to inspire future generations in the realm of performing arts.
