Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Prakash Karat has strongly criticized the ongoing push by certain political forces to make Hindutva the official ideology of the state. Karat, in his recent statements, expressed concerns that these forces are attempting to impose Hindutva on India's diverse political, social, and cultural framework, which he believes undermines the country’s secular and democratic foundation.
Karat pointed out that the idea of Hindutva being promoted as the state’s central ideology directly challenges the pluralistic values enshrined in India's Constitution. He emphasized that such efforts are not only divisive but also pose a threat to the inclusive nature of Indian society, which has always celebrated diversity in religion, culture, and ethnicity.
The CPM leader reiterated that these actions are part of a broader strategy to reshape the political discourse in India, often sidelining minority rights and weakening the secular ideals upheld by the Constitution. Karat’s remarks come at a time when the political debate over the role of Hindutva in shaping governance and policy has become increasingly prominent.
He warned that any move to institutionalize Hindutva could lead to further polarization, putting at risk the unity and integrity of the country. The CPM leader called on all secular forces to unite in opposing any such attempts and ensure that India remains a country that honors its commitment to religious freedom and equality for all citizens.
Political analysts see Karat's statements as part of the larger discourse on the growing influence of Hindutva in India's political landscape, which has been increasingly reflected in the policies of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). With the upcoming elections in mind, political parties are likely to intensify debates surrounding the ideological direction the country should take, especially as the ruling establishment continues to focus on Hindu nationalist themes.
The discussion on Hindutva's place in Indian politics is expected to remain a key issue as the country heads into future elections, with both proponents and opponents of the ideology gearing up for a heated political battle.
