The Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference has brought global attention to advanced naval platforms, with warships emerging as a major focus of the event. Among the highlights is the Qatari Navy’s flagship vessel Al Fulk, an amphibious transport dock ship designed and delivered by Italy’s Fincantieri just months ago. The presence of the vessel underscores Qatar’s growing emphasis on high-end naval capability and regional defence cooperation.

Al Fulk measures 143 metres in length and has a displacement capacity of up to 9,000 tonnes. The ship is designed to transport a wide range of assets, including military hardware, helicopters, landing craft, and up to 500 personnel. Its multi-role design allows it to support amphibious operations, maritime security missions, and humanitarian assistance efforts, making versatility one of its defining features.

The vessel can launch assault operations, conduct security patrols, and support emergency relief missions. It also functions as a floating command and control centre, providing operational coordination for naval and joint forces. Equipped with integrated air and missile defence systems, Al Fulk is capable of protecting not only itself but also nearby vessels operating within its coverage area.

Defence officials highlighted that such capabilities are increasingly important in the current security environment. The ship supports anti-air surveillance, maritime domain awareness, search and rescue missions, and crisis response operations. Its ability to operate in conflict zones while providing logistical and operational support enhances Qatar’s naval readiness.

Although Qatar operates a smaller naval fleet compared to regional powers such as Iran and Saudi Arabia, defence experts note that the country has invested in advanced platforms that offer strong interoperability with allied forces. Similar approaches have been adopted by other Gulf nations, including Kuwait and Oman, which are also participating in the exhibition. Together, these fleets aim to operate effectively as part of coordinated regional and international task groups.

DIMDEX has evolved beyond being a platform solely for displaying military hardware. The event now places greater emphasis on joint operations, interoperability, and regional cooperation among naval forces. Qatar’s role in hosting the exhibition reflects its efforts to strengthen partnerships and promote collaboration in maritime security and freedom of navigation.

The exhibition is being held at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions in the region. Defence analysts note that shifting global alliances and uncertainty in international security dynamics have increased the importance of deterrence and force projection. By showcasing advanced naval assets such as Al Fulk, Qatar signals its commitment to contributing to regional stability and collective security efforts.

DIMDEX continues to serve as a platform for dialogue between defence officials, industry leaders, and military planners. The focus on modern naval capabilities and cooperative security frameworks highlights the changing nature of maritime defence in the Gulf and beyond.
