In a move aimed at strengthening road safety, the National Highways Authority of India has installed red tabletop markings on an accident-prone stretch of highway in the Nauradehi region. The initiative is part of NHAI’s ongoing efforts to reduce road accidents and improve driver awareness at locations identified as high-risk zones.
According to officials, the red tabletop markings are designed to serve as a strong visual warning for motorists approaching dangerous stretches of the road. These markings are laid on raised surfaces, creating a tabletop effect that naturally encourages drivers to slow down. The contrasting red colour improves visibility during both daytime and night-time travel, particularly in foggy or low-light conditions.
Nauradehi has witnessed multiple road accidents in recent years, prompting authorities to assess traffic patterns and identify safety gaps. Based on accident data analysis and field inspections, the stretch was classified as accident-prone, leading to the implementation of corrective measures. The installation of red tabletop markings is one of several engineering interventions recommended to address speeding and inattentive driving.
Officials from NHAI stated that the markings are especially effective near junctions, pedestrian crossing zones, sharp curves, and settlements located along highways. By drawing immediate attention to potential hazards, the markings help drivers react in time and reduce the likelihood of collisions. Early studies conducted by road safety agencies indicate that such measures have contributed to a noticeable decline in accidents on similar stretches across the country.
The latest intervention aligns with the Government of India’s broader road safety strategy, which focuses on engineering improvements, stricter enforcement, public awareness, and emergency response enhancement. NHAI has been gradually introducing innovative traffic-calming solutions, including rumble strips, speed-calming signage, reflective road studs, and improved lane markings on national highways.
Local residents and regular commuters have welcomed the move, stating that speeding vehicles posed a serious threat, particularly during night hours. Authorities have also urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and follow traffic rules, emphasising that infrastructure upgrades alone cannot eliminate accidents without responsible driving behaviour.
NHAI officials confirmed that the effectiveness of the red tabletop markings will be closely monitored over the coming months. Based on performance data and accident trends, similar safety measures may be expanded to other vulnerable highway sections across the state and country. The authority reiterated its commitment to reducing road fatalities and improving overall travel safety on national highways.
