Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reiterated the importance of integrating forensic science and advanced technological tools into India’s criminal justice system to ensure faster investigations and a higher conviction rate. He made these remarks while addressing a national-level conference on forensic science and policing, attended by senior officials from various law enforcement agencies.

Highlighting the limitations of traditional investigative methods, Shah stressed the need to transition towards evidence-based policing that relies on science, data, and forensic analysis. He noted that in the current legal framework, timely and accurate evidence plays a decisive role in securing convictions, especially in complex criminal cases involving cybercrime, terrorism, and organized crime.

“In today’s evolving crime landscape, where criminals are using sophisticated methods, it is imperative for our investigating agencies to stay one step ahead. Forensic science is not just an option—it is the need of the hour,” Shah stated. He added that proper use of technology, including AI, biometric tools, and forensic labs, can significantly improve both the speed and quality of criminal investigations.

Shah further pointed out that India still lags behind several countries in terms of conviction rates and attributed part of this challenge to delayed investigations and lack of scientific evidence. To address this, the government has been focusing on expanding the network of forensic labs and establishing national and regional centres of forensic excellence.

He also underlined the importance of capacity building and training, calling for regular workshops and certification programs for police personnel, forensic experts, and prosecutors. “Only with trained professionals and upgraded infrastructure can we expect real-time crime solving and justice delivery,” he added.

The Union Minister mentioned that the newly enacted criminal law reforms will place greater emphasis on scientific methods, mandating forensic involvement in a wider range of cases. He said that this shift is aimed at creating a transparent, fast, and credible justice system in line with global standards.

Additionally, the Ministry of Home Affairs is working in collaboration with states to implement digital case management systems, centralized criminal databases, and real-time forensic support for field officers.

Shah concluded by urging all stakeholders to adopt a forward-looking approach and embrace innovation in law enforcement. “Our aim is not only to punish the guilty but to ensure swift justice to victims. Technology and forensics are our strongest allies in this mission,” he said.

The event marked a significant push towards scientific policing in India, setting the tone for future reforms in criminal justice delivery.
