Toll charges on national and state highways in Tamil Nadu will increase by 3% to 12% starting April 1, 2025. This revision, which happens annually, is linked to inflation, maintenance expenses, and infrastructure improvements. The hike will impact daily commuters, transporters, and logistics companies, leading to increased travel costs.
Breakdown of the Toll Hike
As per the latest revision, the new toll rates will be as follows:
Light vehicles (cars, SUVs, jeeps): Increase of ₹5-₹15 per toll plaza
Buses & trucks: Increase of ₹20-₹50 per toll plaza
Heavy vehicles (multi-axle trucks, trailers): Increase of ₹40-₹100 per toll plaza
The increase will be applicable to all major highways and expressways operated under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and state authorities.
Why Is the Toll Being Increased?
Authorities have cited rising construction costs, inflation, and road maintenance expenses as the primary reasons for the hike. The annual revision is part of the concession agreements with private operators, ensuring proper upkeep of roads and better facilities for travelers.
Impact on Commuters and Businesses
Daily commuters using highways will face higher travel expenses, especially for long-distance journeys.
Transport and logistics companies may pass on the increased cost to consumers, impacting goods prices and supply chains.
Public transport operators could also adjust ticket fares to offset rising toll expenses.
Conclusion
With the new toll rates coming into effect from April 1, 2025, commuters and businesses should plan their budgets accordingly. Authorities, however, ensure that the revised toll fees contribute to better road infrastructure and travel safety.
