The United Kingdom Civil Aviation Authority has requested detailed information from Air India after reports emerged of a fuel control switch issue involving a Boeing 787 aircraft at London. The regulator has sought clarification on the maintenance procedures carried out on the aircraft before it was allowed to depart for Bengaluru.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the UK aviation regulator sent a formal communication to Air India asking for a comprehensive explanation within one week. The letter reportedly states that failure to provide a satisfactory response could result in regulatory action. Officials noted that such requests from foreign aviation regulators following an incident are part of standard international safety oversight practices.

The issue occurred on February 1 while the Air India flight AI 132 was on the ground in London. During routine checks, the flight crew observed on two occasions that the left engine fuel control switch did not remain positively latched in the run position when light vertical pressure was applied. This raised concerns about the reliability of the switch during flight operations.

Following these observations, the crew attempted to reposition the switch again. On the subsequent attempt, the switch latched correctly and remained stable. After confirming normal operation, the crew proceeded with the scheduled flight to Bengaluru.

Upon arrival in Bengaluru, the aircraft was grounded for further inspection as a precautionary measure. Technical teams conducted detailed checks of both the left and right engine fuel control switches. The Ministry of Civil Aviation later stated that inspections carried out in Bengaluru found both switches to be satisfactory.

Air India has maintained that it follows all prescribed safety and maintenance protocols and cooperates fully with aviation regulators. The airline is expected to submit records related to maintenance work carried out in London, including inspection logs, technical assessments, and clearance procedures.

Aviation experts note that fuel control switches are critical components in aircraft engine operation, and any reported irregularity is treated with high priority. Regulators often review such cases to ensure that maintenance standards and operational procedures comply with international safety requirements.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s request does not automatically indicate a violation but is intended to assess whether all necessary checks were performed before the aircraft was cleared for departure. Aviation authorities worldwide routinely exchange information in such cases to maintain safety oversight.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation in India is also monitoring the situation and is expected to coordinate with international regulators if required. Officials have reiterated that passenger safety remains the highest priority and that any potential risks are addressed through established safety mechanisms.

The matter highlights the close scrutiny applied to aircraft operations and maintenance, particularly for long haul international flights. Further action will depend on Air India’s response and the findings of regulatory authorities following their review.
