Massive floods have wreaked havoc in central Nigeria, displacing more than a million people and affecting multiple states. Continuous rainfall over several weeks has led to widespread destruction, submerging homes, farmlands, and vital infrastructure. Among the most affected are Borno, Bayelsa, and Benue states, where families have been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge in temporary shelters or IDP camps.
In Borno State, around 414,000 people have been displaced as floodwaters swept through communities, destroying homes and livelihoods. Local residents described the chaos, with some families stranded in dangerous conditions while attempting to find safety. The situation has also worsened in Bayelsa, where poor drainage and town planning have exacerbated the flooding, affecting entire neighborhoods and leaving many without shelter.
Humanitarian organizations, including the Red Cross, are working with local authorities to provide urgent assistance such as food, clean water, and medical care to those affected. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has warned that further rainstorms may continue in the region, raising concerns about more displacement and damage.
With many communities already vulnerable due to conflict and insecurity, the floods have intensified existing hardships. Relief agencies are calling for greater international support to address the growing humanitarian crisis and improve resilience against future disasters
