Israeli authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the serious cockpit incident aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073 after an alleged attack by one pilot on another raised questions about whether the aircraft was deliberately targeted for a mass casualty attack.
Flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 when a violent confrontation reportedly broke out inside the cockpit. According to statements from Israeli officials and reports from international news organisations, the co pilot allegedly stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar, an Indian national, and the aircraft subsequently went into a rapid descent.
The aircraft was carrying 174 people, according to Israeli officials. The situation created immediate concern because of the aircraft's sudden change in altitude and the reported struggle inside the cockpit. Israeli authorities reportedly scrambled fighter aircraft after the flight transmitted emergency signals and concerns arose over a possible hijacking or loss of control.
Captain Machchhar was reportedly seriously injured during the confrontation. Despite his injuries, he managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck. They then helped subdue the alleged attacker. Two additional Flydubai pilots who were travelling on the aircraft were subsequently able to assist in regaining control of the flight.
The aircraft was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it made an emergency landing. Machchhar was taken to hospital for treatment and has been reported as stable. The alleged attacker was detained after the aircraft landed, while authorities began examining the circumstances of the incident.
The nationality of the alleged attacker has been reported by Israeli officials as Omani. However, several important details about the incident, including the motive behind the alleged attack, remain under investigation.
The incident has attracted international attention because the aircraft was travelling towards Israel and because of the possibility that the alleged attacker may have attempted to interfere with the aircraft's controls. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the incident as a serious security event.
Netanyahu also referred to the possibility that the incident could have resulted in a disaster comparable to the September 11, 2001 attacks. In an interview, however, he acknowledged that it was still too early to establish the exact motive. CBS News reported that Netanyahu said he believed the incident could have been a suicide attempt rather than a conventional hijacking, based on information available to him at the time.
In another public statement, Netanyahu said the actions of Captain Machchhar and the passengers who entered the cockpit prevented what he described as a potential 9/11 type disaster. That comparison refers to the possibility of a passenger aircraft being deliberately used to cause mass casualties. It does not establish that the alleged attacker had the same objective as the perpetrators of the September 11 attacks.
This distinction is important because investigators have not publicly established the motive behind the cockpit confrontation. Reports from the airline have also urged caution against premature speculation while the investigation continues. Flydubai temporarily suspended its flights to and from Israel following the incident while authorities worked to establish the facts.
The sequence of events is also still being examined. Available reports indicate that the aircraft experienced a sharp descent after the cockpit confrontation. Passenger accounts and official statements indicate that the captain was attacked, the cockpit door was eventually opened, and passengers and crew helped restrain the alleged attacker.
A passenger who helped enter the cockpit later described the struggle to Israeli officials. Additional accounts have provided information about how the passengers and crew worked to prevent the situation from escalating while other qualified pilots took over the aircraft.
The incident has also prompted discussion about aviation security and the risks associated with cockpit access. Authorities are examining how the confrontation began, how the alleged attacker was able to assault the captain, what happened to the aircraft's controls during the descent and whether there was any wider security motivation behind the incident.
At present, it would be premature to state that Flight FZ1073 was definitively intended to become an Israeli version of the September 11 attacks. The comparison has been used publicly by Israeli officials to describe the potential scale of the disaster that could have occurred, rather than as conclusive evidence of the attacker's intention.
Investigators will need to establish the alleged attacker's background, actions, communications and possible motive before determining whether the incident should be classified as terrorism, an attempted hijacking, a deliberate attempt to crash the aircraft or another form of cockpit attack.
The investigation is expected to involve authorities in multiple countries because the flight originated in the United Arab Emirates, was bound for Israel and ultimately landed in Saudi Arabia. The involvement of the airline, aviation authorities and security agencies will be important in establishing a verified account of what happened.
The incident has also generated a large amount of information and speculation on social media. Fact checking organisations have warned that unverified claims and manipulated material are circulating online, including claims about the identities and motives of people involved. Authorities and established news organisations continue to distinguish confirmed information from allegations and speculation.
Captain Smit Machchhar's actions have received public recognition from both Indian and Israeli leaders. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the captain for his actions despite his injuries, while Netanyahu also credited him and the passengers with helping prevent a potentially serious aviation disaster.
The investigation into Flight FZ1073 therefore remains ongoing. While the cockpit attack and subsequent emergency landing have been widely reported, the precise motive behind the alleged attack has not yet been conclusively established. Further findings from the investigation will be required before determining whether the incident was part of a planned terror operation or an isolated act.
