The Guatemalan government has urged the public to remain calm but vigilant.

Guatemala experienced a series of earthquakes over the past 24 hours, leading to widespread alarm and precautionary evacuations across several regions. The seismic activity has prompted authorities to issue emergency alerts and advise residents to leave buildings and gather in open, safe areas until the situation stabilizes.

The strongest of the tremors reportedly registered a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richter scale, according to Guatemala’s National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology, and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH). The quake struck early in the morning and was followed by multiple smaller aftershocks. Residents in cities including Quetzaltenango, Chimaltenango, and parts of Guatemala City reported feeling the ground shake, with many rushing out of homes, schools, and offices.

Although there have been no reports of major casualties, local emergency services confirmed minor injuries and damage to infrastructure, including cracked walls, fallen debris, and disrupted power lines in some areas. Schools and public offices were temporarily closed as a safety measure while buildings were inspected for structural stability.

Government agencies have activated disaster response protocols. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (CONRED) stated that rapid assessment teams have been deployed to affected areas to evaluate the extent of the damage. Search and rescue units are on standby in case further emergencies arise. Temporary shelters have also been prepared in regions that may face displacement due to unsafe housing conditions.

The Guatemalan government has urged the public to remain calm but vigilant. Citizens have been advised to avoid using elevators, stay away from glass windows and tall structures, and have emergency kits ready in case of further seismic activity. Local broadcasters have been continuously updating the public with safety instructions and live updates from seismic monitoring centers.

Earthquakes are not uncommon in Guatemala, which lies along the boundary between the North American and Caribbean tectonic plates. The region is known for its seismic activity, and past quakes have led to significant loss of life and property. As a result, authorities take even moderate quakes seriously, especially when they occur in densely populated urban areas.

International seismic agencies, including the United States Geological Survey (USGS), have also been monitoring the situation and have confirmed the magnitude and location of the initial tremor. So far, there is no indication of tsunami risk from the offshore tremors, although coastal monitoring continues.

Citizens have shared their experiences on social platforms, expressing both fear and relief that the quakes have so far resulted in limited damage. Community groups have mobilized to help elderly residents, assist in inspections, and distribute emergency supplies.

As aftershocks remain a possibility, residents are advised to stay alert and follow instructions from local authorities. Engineers and geologists will continue monitoring seismic activity in the region to better understand the potential for further disturbances.
