The PNB scam, one of the largest financial frauds in Indian banking history, involved the fraudulent issuance of Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) by officials at a Mumbai branch of the bank.

In a significant development related to the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, Nehal Modi, the brother of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, has been arrested in the United States. The arrest follows a formal extradition request made by Indian authorities, who have been pursuing Nehal Modi in connection with his alleged role in assisting his brother and participating in financial activities tied to the multi-crore banking scam.

The PNB scam, one of the largest financial frauds in Indian banking history, involved the fraudulent issuance of Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) by officials at a Mumbai branch of the bank. These LoUs were allegedly used by Nirav Modi and his associates to secure overseas credit from foreign banks without proper collateral. The scam is estimated to have cost the bank over Rs 13,000 crore.

Nehal Modi has been under the radar of investigative agencies in India for several years. Authorities allege that he played a role in helping Nirav Modi evade justice and manage assets linked to the proceeds of the fraud. According to officials, Nehal facilitated the movement of funds, managed companies tied to Nirav Modi’s business network, and attempted to conceal assets from Indian and international law enforcement agencies.

His arrest in the United States is seen as a major step forward in India’s broader efforts to bring to justice individuals who have fled the country after committing economic offenses. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have both been involved in pursuing legal routes to extradite Nehal Modi and other associates of Nirav Modi.

The legal process for extradition, however, can be lengthy. Once a person is arrested based on an extradition request, courts in the host country evaluate the evidence presented and decide whether the individual should be handed over to the requesting nation. In this case, US judicial authorities will examine the Indian government’s case against Nehal Modi before any final decision is made.

Nirav Modi, meanwhile, remains in custody in the United Kingdom, where he is fighting extradition to India. He has been in a London prison since 2019 after being arrested by UK authorities based on a similar Indian request. The extradition proceedings in his case are in an advanced stage.

The arrest of Nehal Modi strengthens India’s stance on financial accountability and the recovery of economic offenders. It also reflects increasing cooperation between international law enforcement agencies in cases involving large-scale financial crimes.

Indian authorities have expressed hope that this latest development will set a precedent for faster resolution of similar cases in the future. They have reiterated the government’s commitment to bringing back fugitives who have defrauded Indian financial institutions and enforcing accountability through legal and diplomatic channels.
