United States Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has emphasized that the India–United States defence partnership continues to remain strong, regardless of administrative changes such as the naming of military commands. His remarks came while responding to questions about the restoration of the previous name associated with the United States Indo-Pacific Command.
Addressing the issue, Ambassador Gor stated that the "name on the letterhead" is far less important than the substance of the relationship between India and the United States. According to him, the focus should remain on the practical cooperation that has steadily expanded between the two countries across defence, security and strategic sectors.
The ambassador highlighted that India and the United States have significantly strengthened their defence partnership over the years through regular military engagement, strategic dialogue and cooperation in defence technology. He noted that these areas of collaboration demonstrate the depth of the bilateral relationship more effectively than administrative or symbolic changes.
India and the United States have developed one of their closest strategic partnerships in recent decades. Defence cooperation has become a central pillar of bilateral relations, supported by regular meetings between senior officials, military exchanges and joint exercises involving the armed forces of both countries.
The two nations regularly conduct joint military exercises covering land, maritime and air operations. These engagements are intended to improve interoperability, strengthen operational coordination and enhance preparedness for humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and regional security challenges.
Ambassador Gor also referred to the shared commitment of both countries to maintaining peace, stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region. He said that the partnership continues to expand in areas such as maritime security, defence innovation, intelligence sharing, emerging technologies and capacity building.
In recent years, India and the United States have signed several defence agreements designed to facilitate closer military cooperation and improve information sharing. The two governments have also increased collaboration in defence manufacturing, logistics support and technology transfer as part of their broader strategic engagement.
The ambassador indicated that the long-term direction of India–US relations remains unchanged despite discussions surrounding administrative decisions. He stressed that the real measure of the partnership lies in the continued cooperation between defence institutions, government agencies and military personnel from both countries.
Defence experts have observed that the India–US strategic partnership has continued to evolve through regular diplomatic engagement and shared interests in regional stability, maritime security and technological cooperation. The relationship has expanded beyond traditional defence cooperation to include cybersecurity, space technology and critical infrastructure protection.
Ambassador Gor's remarks reinforce the view that bilateral cooperation remains focused on long-term strategic objectives rather than symbolic or procedural changes. Both India and the United States have repeatedly expressed their commitment to strengthening defence and security cooperation through sustained dialogue and joint initiatives.
