BMW has expanded its X1 range in India with the introduction of the new X1 Long Wheelbase. The SUV has been launched at an introductory ex showroom price of Rs 49.90 lakh and is locally produced at BMW Group Plant Chennai. It is offered in a petrol powered configuration and is positioned as a more spacious alternative for buyers looking for additional rear seat comfort.

The new BMW X1 LWB focuses primarily on improving passenger space while retaining the premium features and technology expected from the X1 range.

1. Longer Wheelbase and More Rear Space

The biggest change is the extended wheelbase. The BMW X1 LWB has a wheelbase of 2,800 mm, which is 108 mm longer than the standard X1.

BMW says the additional length has been used primarily to increase rear passenger space. Rear legroom has increased by 150 mm, while rear knee room has increased by 109 mm.

The rear seats also feature longer cushioning and can recline by up to 28.5 degrees. These changes are aimed at making the SUV more comfortable for passengers, particularly during longer journeys.

2. 156 hp Turbo Petrol Engine

The BMW X1 LWB is powered by a 1.5 litre three cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine.

The engine produces 156 hp and 230 Nm of peak torque. It is paired with a seven speed Steptronic dual clutch automatic transmission and sends power to the front wheels.

BMW claims a fuel efficiency figure of 15.5 kmpl for the X1 LWB. The SUV also gets a specially tuned Comfort suspension intended to provide a more comfortable driving experience.

There is no diesel powertrain available with the new long wheelbase version. Customers looking for a diesel X1 will have to consider the standard wheelbase model.

3. 540 Litre Boot Capacity

The increased dimensions also bring improvements in luggage capacity.

The BMW X1 LWB offers a 540 litre boot, which can be expanded to as much as 1,700 litres when the rear seats are folded.

The rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 configuration, giving owners greater flexibility when carrying passengers and larger luggage at the same time.

This additional boot space makes the long wheelbase model more practical for family travel and extended journeys.

4. Premium Cabin and BMW Operating System 9

Inside, the BMW X1 LWB receives a range of premium equipment.

The cabin features a widescreen curved display and BMW Operating System 9. The system supports the QuickSelect interface, over the air software updates and digital services through the BMW Digital Premium package.

Other equipment includes electrically adjustable front sport seats, ambient lighting and a Harman Kardon sound system with 12 speakers and 205 watt output.

The SUV also gets a large panoramic glass roof. BMW describes it as one of the largest panoramic sunroofs in its segment.

5. Technology and Safety Features

The X1 LWB also comes with several connected and convenience technologies.

BMW Digital Key Plus allows compatible smartphones and smartwatches to be used for locking, unlocking and starting the vehicle. The digital key can also be shared with other authorised users.

The SUV comes with advanced driver assistance features and multiple safety systems. Reports also indicate the model receives eight airbags and a five star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Design and Dimensions

The BMW X1 LWB measures 4,616 mm in length, 2,104 mm in width and 1,641 mm in height. Its extended wheelbase gives the SUV a noticeably larger profile compared with the standard X1.

The exterior retains BMW's familiar design language, including the kidney grille and adaptive LED headlights. The model also features 18 inch M light alloy wheels and three dimensional LED rear lights.

Price and Positioning

The BMW X1 LWB is priced at Rs 49.90 lakh ex showroom. The introductory price makes it Rs 1 lakh cheaper than the standard petrol X1, which is priced at Rs 50.90 lakh. The electric BMW iX1 eDrive LWB 20L is positioned at Rs 52.70 lakh.

The new long wheelbase model is therefore aimed at buyers who prioritise rear passenger comfort without moving to a larger luxury SUV.

With additional cabin space, a powerful petrol engine, premium equipment and modern connected technology, BMW is positioning the X1 LWB as a practical luxury SUV for the Indian market.

The vehicle is already available for booking through BMW dealerships in India, with deliveries reported to have commenced.
