India’s electric passenger vehicle segment continued its strong growth momentum in April 2026, recording retail sales of 23,506 units across the country. According to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), electric car sales increased by 75.14 percent compared to April 2025, when 13,421 units were sold.

The latest figures highlight the rapid expansion of the electric mobility market in India as customers increasingly shift towards cleaner and more fuel efficient transportation options. The data was collected from 1,463 out of 1,466 Regional Transport Offices across the country, providing a detailed overview of the retail performance of electric passenger vehicles.

On a month on month basis, the segment also showed positive growth. Retail sales increased by 4.52 percent from 22,490 units recorded in March 2026. The consistent rise in monthly sales indicates growing consumer confidence in electric vehicles and improving market acceptance in both urban and semi urban regions.

Industry experts believe the growth is being driven by multiple factors including rising fuel prices, government incentives, better charging infrastructure, and the launch of new electric vehicle models by major automobile manufacturers. Car buyers are also becoming more aware of the long term cost benefits of electric vehicles, including lower maintenance expenses and reduced running costs compared to traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.

Several leading automobile companies have expanded their electric vehicle portfolios over the past year, introducing new models with improved driving range, modern features, and competitive pricing. These launches have helped attract first time buyers as well as customers looking to switch from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric alternatives.

The Indian government’s continued focus on electric mobility through various policies and subsidy programs has also supported the growth of the segment. Incentives under schemes promoting electric vehicles, along with investments in public charging stations, are helping improve accessibility and convenience for EV users across the country.

In addition, financial institutions and vehicle manufacturers are offering attractive financing options and exchange benefits to encourage electric vehicle adoption. Growing awareness about environmental sustainability and carbon emission reduction has further contributed to the increasing popularity of electric passenger vehicles among Indian consumers.

The strong retail performance in April 2026 suggests that India’s electric vehicle market is steadily moving towards mainstream adoption. Industry analysts expect the segment to maintain healthy growth in the coming months as infrastructure development continues and more affordable electric vehicle options enter the market.

Despite challenges such as charging availability in certain regions and battery supply chain concerns, the overall outlook for the Indian electric passenger vehicle industry remains positive. Rising investments from domestic and international automakers are expected to further strengthen the market and support long term growth in the country’s electric mobility sector.
