Building trust in India's digital economy India's digital payments ecosystem has expanded significantly, with UPI becoming a widely used payment method for individuals, retailers and businesses.

The rapid growth of digital payments is changing how consumers and businesses manage financial transactions. As customers increasingly use mobile applications, UPI, debit cards, credit cards and online payment platforms, security has become one of the most important aspects of the digital financial ecosystem. However, the next phase of payment security is not necessarily about adding more steps to every transaction. Instead, the focus is shifting towards invisible security systems that protect users in the background while maintaining a smooth payment experience.

PhonePe has highlighted the evolving role of security in digital payments and the growing importance of payment gateways as strategic growth enablers for businesses. This reflects a wider transformation in the fintech industry, where payment infrastructure is expected to deliver more than simply transferring money from one account to another.

What is invisible security in digital payments?

Invisible security refers to technologies that monitor and protect digital transactions without requiring customers to complete additional verification steps every time they make a payment.

These systems can use artificial intelligence, machine learning, device information, transaction patterns and risk analysis to identify potentially suspicious activity. When a transaction appears normal, the customer may be able to complete the payment without interruption. If the system identifies unusual behaviour or a higher level of risk, it can request additional authentication.

The objective is to balance security with convenience. Excessive verification can make payments frustrating and may cause customers to abandon online purchases. Insufficient protection, on the other hand, can expose consumers and businesses to fraud.

Modern payment security therefore aims to apply the appropriate level of verification based on the risk associated with each transaction.

PhonePe's approach to safer digital payments

PhonePe has introduced several features that reflect the industry's movement towards more convenient and secure payment experiences.

In February 2026, the company announced biometric authentication for UPI payments. The feature allows eligible users to authorise transactions of up to Rs. 5,000 using their smartphone's fingerprint or facial recognition capabilities instead of manually entering a UPI PIN. The company said the feature was designed to make payments easier while reducing the risk of PIN exposure in public places.

PhonePe has also introduced an artificial intelligence-powered integration layer for merchants using its payment gateway. Announced in May 2026, the system is designed to help online businesses integrate the payment gateway through AI coding assistants and a conversational interface. According to the company, the technology can reduce integration timelines from weeks to minutes.

These developments illustrate how payment platforms are working to improve both the customer-facing payment experience and the technical infrastructure used by businesses.

Payment gateways are becoming strategic business tools

Traditionally, payment gateways were primarily viewed as technology services that enabled businesses to accept online payments. Their main responsibility was to securely process transactions between customers, merchants, banks and payment networks.

That role is expanding.

Businesses now expect payment gateways to support faster integration, reliable transaction processing, multiple payment methods, fraud prevention and smoother customer experiences. These capabilities can directly influence online sales and customer retention.

For example, a customer who experiences repeated payment failures during checkout may abandon a purchase. A reliable payment system can reduce such friction and make it easier for businesses to convert customer interest into completed transactions.

Payment gateways can also help businesses manage payment-related information, monitor transaction performance and streamline operational processes. As online commerce expands, these capabilities are becoming important parts of business infrastructure rather than simply technical requirements.

Artificial intelligence and fraud detection

Artificial intelligence is expected to play an increasingly important role in digital payment security.

AI-based systems can analyse transaction patterns and identify unusual behaviour that may indicate fraud. These systems can consider factors such as transaction frequency, device characteristics, payment history and changes in user behaviour.

For instance, a transaction made from an unfamiliar device or an unusual payment pattern may trigger additional verification. Such risk-based systems can help businesses respond to potential threats without applying the same level of friction to every customer.

However, AI-based security is not a complete solution on its own. Payment providers must continue to strengthen data protection, monitor emerging fraud techniques and maintain effective customer verification procedures.

Building trust in India's digital economy

India's digital payments ecosystem has expanded significantly, with UPI becoming a widely used payment method for individuals, retailers and businesses.

PhonePe's own platform figures show the scale of this expansion. As of September 2026, the company reported approximately 730 million lifetime registered users, more than 50 million lifetime registered merchants and 11 billion customer transactions during that month.

At this scale, payment reliability and security are essential to maintaining customer confidence. Even a small improvement in transaction success rates or fraud prevention can have a meaningful impact across a large payment network.

For smaller businesses, dependable payment infrastructure can also make digital commerce more accessible. Merchants can accept payments without building their own complex financial technology systems, allowing them to focus on customers and business operations.

The road ahead

The future of digital payments will depend on how effectively companies combine security, convenience and reliability. Invisible security technologies can help protect transactions without making routine payments unnecessarily complicated.

At the same time, payment gateways are evolving into broader business enablers by supporting merchant integration, operational efficiency and customer experience.

For PhonePe and the wider fintech industry, the challenge will be to maintain customer trust while responding to increasingly sophisticated digital threats. As payment systems become more deeply integrated into everyday commerce, security will increasingly be measured not only by how effectively threats are prevented but also by how seamlessly genuine customers can complete their transactions.
