The University Grants Commission has announced the opening of nominations for the DRDO National Awards 2024–25. The awards, instituted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation, aim to recognise individuals and research teams who have made exceptional contributions in the fields of defence science, advanced technology development, and strategic research. Through this annual initiative, DRDO highlights pathbreaking work that strengthens national security and supports the growth of indigenous defence capabilities.
According to the UGC notification, eligible higher education institutions, including universities, deemed universities, and research institutes, are invited to nominate deserving candidates for various award categories. These categories may include innovation, technology leadership, science excellence, and collaborative research contributions. The awards are designed to encourage academic researchers, scientists, faculty members, and innovators who contribute significantly to defence related projects, prototype development, or technological advancements aligned with DRDOs objectives.
The nomination deadline has been set for December 1, and the UGC has urged institutions to adhere strictly to the timeline. The nomination process requires institutions to verify the credentials of the nominees, compile supporting documents, and follow the prescribed format outlined in the official notification. Each nomination must include a detailed summary of the candidate’s achievements, publications, patents, project outcomes, and contributions to defence technology or applied science.
The evaluation process for the DRDO National Awards includes a thorough review of research quality, innovation, relevance to national security, and the potential impact of the work on future defence projects. A committee appointed by DRDO will assess the nominations and select awardees based on merit, originality, and contribution to scientific advancement.
The awards not only recognise individual excellence but also promote collaboration between academic institutions and defence research organisations. Over the years, several researchers from universities and institutes have contributed to key national defence projects, and the awards serve as a platform to highlight and encourage such contributions.
Institutions have been advised to share the notification widely among their faculty members and research teams to ensure maximum participation. The UGC has also emphasised the need for accuracy and completeness when preparing nominations, as incomplete submissions may not be considered for evaluation.
The DRDO National Awards are regarded as one of the most prestigious recognitions in the defence research sector. Awardees receive national level acknowledgment, which can significantly enhance the visibility of their work and inspire further innovation. The recognition also helps strengthen the bond between academic research and defence technology development, an area of increasing importance for the country.
With the nomination process now open, universities and institutions across India are expected to identify and nominate candidates who have demonstrated excellence, leadership, and innovation in defence research. The UGC has encouraged timely submission to ensure that talented researchers receive the recognition they deserve in the upcoming award cycle.
