Director Anurag Basu has opened up about the emotional and creative inspiration behind his latest film, Metro… In Dino, calling it a modern-day tribute to iconic Bollywood romances such as Silsila and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ). In a recent interview, Basu explained that the film is not just a collection of love stories, but a heartfelt reflection on the evolving nature of relationships in today’s fast-paced urban life.
The filmmaker, known for his unique storytelling and layered characters, said that Metro… In Dino is designed to capture the spirit of classic Hindi cinema while presenting it through the lens of modern reality. “For me, this is my Silsila, my DDLJ Part 2,” Basu remarked, adding that the film aims to evoke similar emotions of longing, connection, and destiny that have made those earlier films enduring favourites.
Set in contemporary urban India, Metro… In Dino brings together an ensemble cast featuring Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Konkona Sen Sharma, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Pankaj Tripathi. The film weaves together multiple stories, all connected by themes of love, trust, misunderstandings, and the search for meaning in personal relationships.
Basu emphasized that the film is not meant to imitate the older classics but instead to honour their emotional depth and sincerity. “This generation has a different way of expressing love. They live differently, but the emotions are the same. That is what I have tried to portray in Metro… In Dino,” he said.
The movie is also a spiritual successor to his 2007 film Life in a... Metro, which similarly explored urban relationships in a multi-narrative format. However, Basu clarified that Metro… In Dino is not a sequel but a standalone film that draws inspiration from the earlier film’s structure while addressing themes relevant to a new generation.
The film’s music, composed by Pritam, has also received early praise for capturing the emotional tone of the stories.
