Mumbai: A major breakthrough in India’s fight against digital piracy has emerged as authorities expose a nationwide film leak scam estimated at Rs 22,400 crore.

Mumbai:

A major breakthrough in India’s fight against digital piracy has emerged as authorities expose a nationwide film leak scam estimated at Rs 22,400 crore. This large-scale piracy network allegedly focused on Bollywood productions, illegally distributing newly released movies through various online platforms within hours of their theatrical debut.

The operation, described as one of the largest film piracy rings in the country, involved a well-organised group using advanced technology to hack into production houses, post-production studios, and streaming platforms. According to investigators, the syndicate used pirated content to generate massive revenues through illegal downloads, subscriptions, and advertising on pirate websites.

The investigation was jointly carried out by multiple cybercrime units, digital forensic experts, and the anti-piracy division of the Indian film industry. Several raids were conducted across key metro cities including Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. Officials confirmed that numerous servers hosting pirated content were seized, and several individuals believed to be central figures in the operation have been detained.

According to preliminary findings, the group primarily targeted big-budget Bollywood films, especially those with high pre-release buzz. The leaked content was often uploaded within hours or even minutes after official release, affecting both theatrical collections and digital platform revenues. Authorities believe the group had insiders who facilitated early access to unreleased or just-released films.

The scam caused massive financial losses to producers, distributors, and theatres. Industry bodies like the Producers Guild of India and the Film Federation of India have welcomed the crackdown and urged stricter enforcement of anti-piracy laws. They pointed out that such digital theft not only impacts revenue but also discourages investments in creative content.

A spokesperson for the anti-piracy cell revealed that the estimated loss of Rs 22,400 crore includes damages over the last few years due to systematic and continuous leaks. The figure was calculated based on box office estimates, digital streaming rights losses, and international distribution impacts.

In recent years, the Indian film industry has invested heavily in digital releases, often premiering on OTT platforms. However, this shift has also made the content more vulnerable to cyberattacks and digital theft. The authorities said they are working closely with streaming services to strengthen cybersecurity protocols and trace pirated copies using watermarking and blockchain tracking tools.

In response to the case, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has announced plans to revisit anti-piracy legislation and possibly introduce harsher penalties for digital content theft. Legal experts argue that India’s copyright enforcement laws need to be updated to address the challenges posed by cross-border digital piracy.

This crackdown is seen as a significant step forward in protecting intellectual property in the Indian film industry. It also serves as a warning to digital pirates and insiders who attempt to exploit creative content for unlawful profit.

As the investigation continues, more arrests are expected in the coming weeks, and authorities hope to dismantle the entire chain of operations that contributed to one of the most damaging piracy networks in Bollywood’s history.
