Whether the film can match or exceed the lifetime earnings of his previous blockbuster remains to be seen in the coming days.

Sunny Deol returned to the big screen with Border 2, which released in theatres on January 23, 2026. Directed by Anurag Singh, the film is a sequel to the iconic 1997 war drama Border and has generated significant interest among audiences even before its release. The film opened to largely positive reviews, with praise directed at its scale, performances, and patriotic themes.

On its first day at the box office, Border 2 collected Rs 32.10 crore in India. The strong opening indicates continued audience interest in large-scale war dramas and also highlights Sunny Deol’s enduring box office appeal. Trade analysts described the opening as solid, especially considering the competitive release window and high expectations surrounding the film.

Despite the strong start, Border 2 could not surpass the opening day collection of Gadar 2, another Sunny Deol starrer released in 2023. Gadar 2 had recorded an opening day collection of Rs 40.1 crore, setting one of the highest first-day records in Hindi cinema. Directed by Anil Sharma, Gadar 2 went on to become a massive commercial success, earning approximately Rs 686 crore gross worldwide.

Border 2 also faced box office competition from the international release Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet. However, industry experts note that the presence of a Hollywood release did not significantly impact Border 2’s opening performance, particularly in single-screen theatres and mass-dominated circuits where Sunny Deol enjoys strong popularity.

The film features an ensemble cast, including Varun Dhawan alongside Sunny Deol, and showcases large-scale battle sequences inspired by real-life military events. The makers have positioned Border 2 as a tribute to the Indian armed forces, with high production values and an emotionally driven narrative aimed at appealing to a broad audience base.

Trade observers believe that Border 2’s long-term box office performance will depend heavily on word of mouth and weekday collections. While the opening numbers are encouraging, sustaining momentum over the first weekend and beyond will be key in determining whether the film can achieve blockbuster status.

Cinema exhibitors have reported good occupancy levels during evening and night shows in major cities, as well as strong turnout in northern states. The upcoming weekend is expected to further boost collections if the film continues to receive positive audience feedback.

As comparisons with Gadar 2 continue, Border 2 is being seen as another significant addition to Sunny Deol’s recent box office resurgence. Whether the film can match or exceed the lifetime earnings of his previous blockbuster remains to be seen in the coming days.
