At the same time, he explained that the recreated version of Sandese Aate Hain in Border 2 was approached with emotional responsibility and a deep sense of tribute.

The upcoming war drama Border 2 has once again brought the iconic song Sandese Aate Hain into public conversation, following comments by veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar on the practice of recreating classic songs. Singer Sonu Nigam, who originally lent his voice to the song in the 1997 film Border, has now responded to Akhtar’s remarks, offering a balanced perspective.

Javed Akhtar recently expressed reservations about the trend of recreating timeless compositions, arguing that classic songs should be preserved in their original form. Reacting to this, Sonu Nigam shared his thoughts through a video message on social media, stating that he understands and respects Akhtar’s opinion. At the same time, he explained that the recreated version of Sandese Aate Hain in Border 2 was approached with emotional responsibility and a deep sense of tribute.

Nigam said the song in Border 2 retains the soul of the original while incorporating new lyrics to reflect the evolving narrative of the franchise. He described the song as a dedication to Indian soldiers and citizens, emphasising that it was recreated not for commercial reasons but to reconnect audiences with the emotions that defined the original film.

Border 2 is directed by Anurag Singh and co-produced by JP Dutta, who directed the original Border, along with his daughter Nidhi Dutta. The film is being positioned as a spiritual sequel rather than a direct continuation, aiming to honour the legacy of the 1997 classic while introducing a new storyline and characters.

Sunny Deol returns to the franchise, joined by Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty. The film also features an ensemble of prominent artists contributing to its music. Apart from Sonu Nigam, the recreated version of Sandese Aate Hain includes vocals by Arijit Singh, Diljit Dosanjh, and Vishal Singh, with additional lyrics written by Manoj Muntashir.

The original Sandese Aate Hain remains one of the most celebrated patriotic songs in Indian cinema, remembered for its emotional depth and connection with soldiers posted away from home. Its return in Border 2 has generated strong emotional reactions among fans, many of whom associate the song closely with national pride and sacrifice.

Industry observers note that recreating iconic songs often invites debate, particularly when originals hold deep cultural significance. In this case, Sonu Nigam’s response highlights an attempt to strike a balance between respecting creative legacy and adapting it for a new cinematic generation.

With Border 2 nearing release, the renewed discussion around its music underscores the lasting impact of the original Border film. Whether the recreated version resonates with audiences in the same way remains to be seen, but the intent behind the project has been clearly articulated by its creators and performers.
