Mumbai:

In a bold and thought-provoking statement, the producer of Chhorii 2, the upcoming horror thriller starring Nushrratt Bharuccha, has questioned the use of the term “women-centric films”, calling it a discriminatory label. The remark has triggered meaningful discussions in the industry around gendered language and representation in Indian cinema.

The producer, whose name is associated with several critically acclaimed projects, shared during a recent press interaction that the film industry needs to move past the gender divide when it comes to storytelling. “Why are we still tagging stories as ‘women-centric’ or ‘male-centric’? A film is a film. If a woman is leading the story, that doesn’t make it a niche or a special case — it’s just a strong narrative,” they said.

Chhorii 2, the sequel to the 2021 hit Chhorii, continues Nushrratt Bharuccha’s journey as a woman facing both supernatural horror and societal challenges. The first film was widely appreciated for blending horror with a powerful social message, and expectations are high for the second installment. Yet, the team behind the film wants it to be recognized as a mainstream story, not just one with a female lead.

Bharuccha, who has previously voiced similar concerns about typecasting and gendered branding in the industry, supported the producer’s views. “It’s time to normalize women leading stories without having to put a label on them. Audiences want good cinema, regardless of who’s on the poster,” she commented.

Industry insiders have chimed in with mixed reactions. While some applauded the producer’s perspective as progressive, others believe the term still serves to highlight underrepresented voices in Indian cinema. Regardless, the statement has reignited conversations about gender equity in the film business.

With Chhorii 2 set for release later this year, it’s not just the horror storyline that’s drawing attention — it’s also the message behind the scenes that’s making headlines.
