The much-loved Bollywood film Piku, featuring stellar performances by Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and the late Irrfan Khan, is all set for a theatrical re-release to commemorate its 10th anniversary. The announcement has been met with excitement from fans and film enthusiasts who remember the movie for its emotional depth, subtle humour, and strong character portrayals.
Originally released in May 2015, Piku was directed by Shoojit Sircar and written by Juhi Chaturvedi. The film explored the bittersweet relationship between a young, independent architect named Piku (Deepika Padukone) and her eccentric, aging father Bhashkor Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan). Irrfan Khan played Rana, the practical and composed owner of a taxi service, who unexpectedly becomes part of their emotional journey from Delhi to Kolkata.
The film was widely praised for breaking conventional Bollywood storytelling by focusing on everyday life, intergenerational relationships, and familial responsibilities. Its realistic dialogue, nuanced performances, and minimalistic yet powerful screenplay earned it several accolades, including National Film Awards and Filmfare trophies.
To celebrate the film’s legacy, the production house has confirmed that Piku will be re-released in select theatres across India on May 8, 2025. The announcement was made via social media, with a nostalgic poster featuring all three leads. Fans were quick to react with both joy and emotion, especially remembering the contribution of Irrfan Khan, who passed away in 2020 after a battle with cancer.
Director Shoojit Sircar expressed his thoughts in a recent interview: “Piku was a film made with a lot of heart. It connected deeply with audiences across age groups. Re-releasing it is our way of reliving that experience and paying tribute to Irrfan, whose presence made the film truly special.”
Deepika Padukone also shared her feelings on the re-release, calling it “an emotional milestone.” She noted that the film remains close to her heart, not just for the role she played, but for the relationships it portrayed and the legacy it carries.
The theatrical re-release of Piku offers a chance for newer audiences to experience a modern classic on the big screen and serves as a reminder of the brilliance that Irrfan Khan brought to Indian cinema.
As fans count down to the release date, Piku stands as a timeless reflection of familial bonds — tender, flawed, and unforgettable.
