The group raised concerns regarding the portrayal of their community in the film, leading to a delay in its approval.

Kangana Ranaut’s much-awaited political drama Emergency has officially announced a new release date of January 17, 2025, after facing delays due to issues with certification. The film was initially scheduled to release on September 6, 2024, but was postponed when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withheld its certification following objections from a Sikh group. The group raised concerns regarding the portrayal of their community in the film, leading to a delay in its approval. In light of the new release date, Kangana took to social media, sharing a new poster of the film with the message: “17th January 2025 – The epic saga of the nation’s most powerful woman and the moment that altered India’s destiny. Emergency – Unveils Only in cinemas on 17.01.2025!”

Directed by Kangana herself, Emergency is based on the life and times of Indira Gandhi, the late Prime Minister of India, focusing particularly on the controversial period in 1975 when she declared a national emergency. This decision drastically altered the political landscape of India, and the film seeks to delve into the powerful woman behind that momentous decision. The story is expected to explore the political and personal challenges faced by Gandhi during this tumultuous time, providing a gripping narrative of power, politics, and patriotism.

Kangana plays the role of Indira Gandhi, a role that demands a strong portrayal of a complex and influential figure in Indian history. The film’s star-studded cast includes Anupam Kher, who plays an important role alongside Kangana, and veteran actor Satish Kaushik. Additionally, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, and Vishak Nair also feature in significant roles, bringing together a blend of seasoned talent for this ambitious project.

The screenplay and dialogue of Emergency are penned by noted writer Ritesh Shah, known for his work on films such as Pink and Kahaani. The movie promises to be a high-stakes drama with a focus on both the political intrigue of the Emergency period and the personal struggles of the key figures involved.

Emergency is produced by Kangana Ranaut herself, in collaboration with Renu Pitti and Umesh KR Bansal. With the film now slated for a January 2025 release, audiences can expect a deeper dive into a pivotal moment in India’s history, told through the lens of one of the most controversial and powerful figures of the 20th century. Kangana has expressed her excitement about sharing this historical narrative with audiences, especially with the backdrop of the 1975 Emergency, which remains one of the most significant and debated chapters in India’s political history.

With production completed and the final touches being made, Emergency is set to capture the complexities of power, governance, and the consequences of unchecked authority, positioning it as one of the most anticipated films of 2025.

The film was initially scheduled to release on September 6, 2024, but was postponed when the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withheld its certification following objections from a Sikh group.
