Ahead of legendary actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor's 100th birth anniversary on December 14, celebrations have begun to honor his immense contributions to Indian cinema. The man behind iconic films like Shree 420, Aawara, Mera Naam Joker, and more, continues to live on in the hearts of his family and fans. In an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, his granddaughter, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, shares heartwarming memories of the time spent with her beloved grandfather.
Reflecting on her childhood, Riddhima, the daughter of late actor Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor, recalls the cherished weekends spent with her grandparents at their Chembur home. “My brother Ranbir and I had the best time with him. Every weekend, we would go there and sometimes even bring our friends for sleepovers. They used to be so happy to have us, along with all the other kids,” she reminisces.
One of Riddhima’s fondest memories is of Raj Kapoor's cooking. “He used to cook on his own,” she says. “My grandfather would make our favorite dishes, and my personal favorite was his macaroni and cheese. It was our staple, made in his unique style, with a secret ingredient that I’m sure was there. The food was always made with so much love, and I can still taste the flavor today—it was delicious.”
These memories offer a glimpse into the personal side of the legendary figure, who was not just a filmmaker but also a loving grandfather, creating lasting impressions on his family through simple, yet meaningful gestures.
