In recent years, the story of Rezang La has been brought into the spotlight again through books, documentaries, and films, ensuring that the legacy of Major Shaitan Singh and his brave men remains alive in public memory.

The Battle of Rezang La, fought on 18 November 1962 during the India China war, remains etched in history as a symbol of unmatched courage and selfless sacrifice. Located at an altitude of over 16000 feet in the Chushul sector of Ladakh, Rezang La became the site of one of the most heroic last stands in Indian military history. Major Shaitan Singh, leading a company of 120 soldiers from the 13 Kumaon Regiment, faced an overwhelming force of nearly 3000 Chinese troops.

The conditions were extremely harsh. The soldiers were posted at a high-altitude pass with freezing temperatures, inadequate winter clothing, and limited supplies. Despite these challenges, Major Shaitan Singh and his men stood firm in their defence of Indian territory. The Chinese forces launched repeated and heavy attacks with artillery and machine guns, but the Indian soldiers held their ground with courage and determination.

Major Shaitan Singh’s leadership proved to be a defining factor in the battle. Refusing to retreat, he moved from bunker to bunker, motivating his men and leading by example. Even after being critically injured, he ordered his men to leave him behind and continue the fight. His bravery and strategic resistance helped delay the Chinese advance in the Chushul sector, buying valuable time for Indian reinforcements to arrive.

Of the 120 soldiers who defended Rezang La, 114 were martyred. The few survivors recounted how their fellow soldiers fought till their last bullet, and when ammunition ran out, they resorted to hand-to-hand combat. The Chinese army reportedly suffered heavy casualties, and despite eventually taking the post, they were stunned by the resistance shown by such a small force.

The bravery of the 13 Kumaon Regiment at Rezang La earned national and international recognition. Major Shaitan Singh was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest wartime gallantry award. His leadership and sacrifice continue to inspire generations of Indian soldiers and citizens.

A memorial was later constructed at Rezang La to honour the fallen heroes of this epic battle. It stands as a solemn reminder of the supreme price paid by those who defended the motherland against overwhelming odds. In recent years, the story of Rezang La has been brought into the spotlight again through books, documentaries, and films, ensuring that the legacy of Major Shaitan Singh and his brave men remains alive in public memory.
