Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, known globally for his bold storytelling and artistic vision, has expressed deep gratitude upon receiving the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian award. The honour was conferred by the Government of India in recognition of his remarkable contributions to cinema, both in India and internationally.

Taking to social media shortly after the announcement, Shekhar Kapur described the award as the "greatest honour" of his life. He extended his thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the President of India, and the Ministry of Home Affairs for the recognition, stating that it inspires him to continue creating stories that transcend borders and reflect the soul of India.

“To receive the Padma Bhushan is not just an honour, it is also a reminder of the deep responsibility I carry as a storyteller. I thank the Government of India for this incredible recognition. I am humbled,” Kapur wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Shekhar Kapur’s cinematic journey spans several decades and includes critically acclaimed films like Masoom (1983), Mr. India (1987), and Bandit Queen (1994). His work on Elizabeth (1998), a biographical drama about Queen Elizabeth I starring Cate Blanchett, received multiple international awards and earned him global recognition. The film’s sequel, Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), was also well received, cementing his reputation as a director of international calibre.

Kapur’s filmmaking style often blends Indian themes with global narratives, making him a cultural ambassador for India in many ways. His work has received numerous accolades, including national and international awards, but the Padma Bhushan holds special significance, as it reflects the nation’s appreciation of his enduring contributions.

In his statement, Kapur also emphasized the importance of storytelling in a rapidly changing world. “Storytelling is a powerful tool that helps connect people, inspire change, and preserve heritage. I hope to continue creating cinema that speaks to the world, yet remains rooted in Indian values,” he said.

Several film industry colleagues, politicians, and fans congratulated Shekhar Kapur on the honour. Bollywood celebrities such as Anil Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, and A.R. Rahman shared their wishes, acknowledging Kapur’s role in shaping modern Indian cinema.

The Padma Bhushan award is part of India’s Padma Awards, announced annually on the eve of Republic Day. These awards honour distinguished service across fields such as arts, literature, science, public service, and industry. In 2025, the list included a diverse group of individuals whose work has significantly impacted Indian society.

Shekhar Kapur is also currently involved in new film projects and digital content ventures, continuing to mentor emerging filmmakers and contributing to global cinema. His latest directorial venture, What's Love Got to Do with It?, has received international acclaim.

As he receives this prestigious honour, Shekhar Kapur stands as an inspiring figure for generations of storytellers and filmmakers, both in India and abroad.

I hope to continue creating cinema that speaks to the world, yet remains rooted in Indian values,” he said.
