In a candid revelation, actress Soha Ali Khan discussed the ongoing scrutiny she faces over her interfaith marriage to actor Kunal Kemmu. Despite celebrating ten years of marital bliss, Soha shared that she continues to encounter unsolicited comments questioning her religious identity and practices.
Soha, daughter of veteran actress Sharmila Tagore and late cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, married Kunal Kemmu, who hails from a Hindu background, in 2015. The couple's union, while celebrated by many, has also been a focal point for online trolls fixated on their differing religious backgrounds.
In a recent interview, Soha expressed her amusement at the nature of the comments she receives. "It doesn't bother me," she stated, "but it's interesting how people feel entitled to question my religious practices based on what I share online. If I post about Diwali, someone inevitably asks, 'How many rozas have you kept?' If it's Holi, then it's 'What kind of Muslim are you?'"
Soha emphasized that such remarks are reflective of deeper societal issues. She noted that even in modern, educated circles, outdated expectations persist. "There's still a notion that without a son, a family is incomplete," she remarked. "I have a daughter, and while I'm immensely proud and happy, there's an undercurrent suggesting I've disappointed someone."
Reflecting on her family's history, Soha highlighted the progressive strides made by the women before her. Her grandmother, for instance, fought societal norms to pursue higher education, becoming one of the first women in Bengal to earn a Master's degree. Similarly, her mother, Sharmila Tagore, navigated the challenges of being a working actress in an era when such choices were frowned upon.
These familial experiences have instilled in Soha a resilience to societal judgments. She credits her family's support for allowing her the freedom to make life choices without undue pressure. "I got married at 36, pursued higher education, and chose to have a child later in life. Thankfully, I wasn't subjected to the kind of scrutiny my predecessors faced."
On the professional front, Soha recently appeared in the horror sequel 'Chhorii 2', which premiered on an OTT platform on April 11, 2025. The film features Nushrratt Bharuccha in the lead role, with Soha portraying a significant character named Daasi Maa.
Soha's experiences shed light on the persistent societal biases that continue to affect individuals, especially women, in contemporary India. Her candidness serves as a reminder of the importance of challenging and overcoming these deep-seated prejudices.
