Waack Girls, the upcoming drama series created and directed by Padma Shri awardee Sooni Taraporevala, is set to stream on Prime Video starting November 22. The nine-episode series is a vibrant mix of comedy, drama, music, and dance, starring newcomers Mekhola Bose, Anasua Chowdhury, Rytasha Rathore, Chrisann Pereira, Priyam Saha, Ruby Sah, and Achintya Bose. The ensemble also includes seasoned actors Barun Chanda, Lillete Dubey, and the late Nitesh Pandey in pivotal roles.
Set in the lively city of Kolkata, Waack Girls follows six young women passionate about waacking, a dance style unfamiliar in India. The show captures their struggles and triumphs as they form a dance group and push against societal expectations. The main characters include Ishani (played by Mekhola Bose), an expert waacker and choreographer, and Lopa (played by Rytasha Rathore), the group’s scrappy and enthusiastic manager.
Creator Sooni Taraporevala, who first fell in love with waacking after watching Mekhola Bose dance, expresses her excitement about presenting this unconventional, yet fun, story to the world. She emphasizes that while the show revolves around dance, it is also a reflection of the personal challenges faced by the characters as they confront family pressure and societal norms. Waack Girls promises a captivating blend of dance, heartfelt drama, and humor that resonates with audiences of all ages.
