Renowned playback singer Sreerama Chandra recently reflected on one of his most well-loved songs, Subhanallah, from the 2013 Bollywood hit Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD). In a candid interview, the Indian Idol winner shared his thoughts on the music promotion strategy of the film and how certain tracks gained more visibility than others — particularly those featuring the on-screen chemistry of Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, directed by Ayan Mukerji, became one of the defining romantic dramas of its time. Alongside its captivating storyline and star-studded cast, the film was celebrated for its vibrant music album, composed by Pritam. Songs like Badtameez Dil, Balam Pichkari, and Dilliwali Girlfriend turned into massive commercial hits and were heavily promoted across platforms.
However, Subhanallah, a romantic and melodious track sung by Sreerama Chandra and Shilpa Rao, offered a softer, more emotional touch to the album. Despite its popularity among music lovers, Sreerama revealed that the song did not receive equal marketing attention.
He pointed out that the more energetic and glamorous tracks were prioritized in promotions, largely because of the sizzling on-screen chemistry between Ranbir and Deepika — one of the most talked-about celebrity couples of the time, both on and off screen. Their pairing brought in massive fan attention, and the upbeat songs featuring their dance sequences became the face of the film’s promotional campaign.
Sreerama stated, “Ranbir and Deepika were considered the hottest couple back then. Naturally, the songs that highlighted their on-screen romance and energy got pushed more. Subhanallah was beautiful, but it did not get the same push as Badtameez Dil or Balam Pichkari.”
Despite this, the singer acknowledged the song’s loyal fan base and how listeners continue to appreciate its lyrical depth and composition even today. He expressed gratitude for being part of such a significant film and working alongside talented artists and composers.
Over the years, Subhanallah has earned a special place among fans who prefer romantic ballads over party anthems. Its calming melody, heartfelt lyrics, and serene visuals from Kashmir have made it a timeless addition to Bollywood’s romantic playlist.
Sreerama Chandra also touched upon how the music industry often tilts towards commercial appeal, where promotional strategies are designed to highlight songs that can create maximum buzz. However, he remains proud of his work and believes that quality music always finds its audience, even if not immediately.
As Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani continues to hold a nostalgic charm among fans, songs like Subhanallah remind us of the quieter, more emotional moments that give films their soul — even if they don’t always make it to the top of the promotional charts.
