Bollywood veteran Suniel Shetty has set the record straight about the much-anticipated comedy sequel Hera Pheri 3. In a recent media interaction, Shetty clarified that actor Kartik Aaryan was never considered as a replacement for Akshay Kumar in the franchise, putting to rest months of fan speculation and online debates.
The confusion began in late 2022 when Kartik Aaryan was spotted in meetings with the Hera Pheri team, sparking rumors that he would take over Akshay Kumar’s iconic role as Raju. The reports triggered mixed reactions from fans, many of whom were unhappy with the idea of a new actor replacing one of the most loved characters in Bollywood comedy history.
However, Shetty has now clarified the situation.
“Kartik was never stepping into Akshay’s shoes. Akshay Kumar is and will always be Raju,” Shetty said during the promotion of his upcoming project. “There was a misunderstanding, and I’m glad we’re clearing the air now.”
He further explained that Kartik’s inclusion in Hera Pheri 3 was about expanding the storyline with a new character and not replacing anyone from the original trio — Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and himself.
“Kartik has a fresh and energetic presence, and his role brings a new dynamic to the film. But the heart of Hera Pheri — Raju, Shyam, and Baburao — remains untouched,” Shetty added.
This announcement has been welcomed by fans, who have been eagerly awaiting the third installment of the cult comedy series that began in 2000. Both Hera Pheri and its sequel Phir Hera Pheri became massive hits, known for their hilarious dialogues and the unique chemistry between the lead trio.
Kartik Aaryan also responded to the clarification with a statement on social media:
“Honored to be part of the Hera Pheri universe. No one can replace legends. I'm just excited to share screen space with them.”
The filming for Hera Pheri 3 is set to begin later this year, with a theatrical release expected in early 2026. The movie will be directed by Farhad Samji and produced by Firoz Nadiadwala.
