Film certification and release processes in India often involve scrutiny under various legal frameworks, and filmmakers may face legal action if objections are raised by individuals or groups.

The Supreme Court of India has granted relief to the makers of an upcoming crime thriller film after recording an undertaking that the earlier title Ghooskhor Pandit has been withdrawn. The film, starring Manoj Bajpayee and produced by Neeraj Pandey, is slated for release on Netflix.

The project had faced legal challenges following objections to its original title. Multiple First Information Reports were lodged in different parts of India, with complainants alleging that the title was defamatory towards the Brahmin community. The controversy led to heightened public debate and concerns over potential social tensions.

In response to the situation, the filmmakers removed promotional content related to the film from social media platforms. Posters, teasers and other publicity material carrying the earlier title were taken down. The producers subsequently approached the Supreme Court seeking appropriate relief in light of the legal proceedings initiated in various jurisdictions.

During the hearing, Neeraj Pandey submitted an affidavit before the court clarifying the production team’s position. In the affidavit, he stated that the earlier title stands unequivocally withdrawn and will not be used in any manner whatsoever. He further affirmed that any new title chosen for the film would not resemble or evoke the withdrawn title and would be selected with due consideration to public sentiments.

Pandey also informed the court that all promotional material under the previous title had already been withdrawn prior to the listing of the present petition. He assured that the revised title would accurately reflect the narrative and intent of the film without leading to unintended interpretations.

Taking note of the undertaking, the Supreme Court granted relief to the petitioners. The court’s order effectively records the withdrawal of the earlier title and acknowledges the producer’s assurance regarding future steps. The detailed reasoning of the court order is awaited in the official records.

The incident highlights the legal sensitivities that can arise around film titles and creative works, particularly when sections of society perceive them as offensive or defamatory. As of now, the new title of the Manoj Bajpayee starrer has not been announced. The production team has indicated that it will be finalised after careful consideration. The film remains in the spotlight due to the legal proceedings and subsequent court intervention.

Further updates regarding the revised title and release schedule are expected once official announcements are made by the producers or the streaming platform.
