Since his passing, tributes have poured in from across the film industry, with figures like Rajinikanth, Karthi, Vijay Sethupathi, and director Suresh Krissna remembering him fondly for his talent and legacy.

Delhi Ganesh, the iconic character actor of Tamil cinema, passed away on Sunday at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy that spans nearly five decades. Known for his versatile roles across over 400 films, Ganesh’s career was marked by his ability to portray characters with authenticity and emotional depth. Whether playing comedic, villainous, or emotional roles, his presence was always felt. He worked alongside some of Tamil cinema’s finest, including Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijay, Ajith, and Silambarasan, and was beloved by audiences for his adaptability and commitment to his craft.

Born as Ganesan on August 1, 1944, in Chennai, he initially served in the Indian Air Force before pursuing his passion for acting. His stage name, “Delhi Ganesh,” came from his involvement with the Delhi-based theater group Dakshina Bharata Nataka Sabha. It was through his stage performance in Dowry Kalyana Vaibhogame that he caught the attention of renowned director K. Balachander, leading to his breakthrough role in Pattina Pravesam (1976). This marked the beginning of an illustrious career.

Ganesh's most notable performances include his portrayal of Francis Anbarasu in Aboorva Sagodharargal, his roles in Michael Madana Kama Rajan, Avvai Shanmugi, Nayakan, Sindhu Bhairavi, and Engamma Maharani. He also featured in television serials such as Ragasiyam and Kasthuri, leaving an indelible mark on the small screen as well. His ability to bring life to even the smallest of roles was unparalleled, and his cameo in the Netflix anthology Navarasa was widely praised.

His final film role was in Indian 2, directed by Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan. Throughout his career, Delhi Ganesh was known for his generosity in helping budding directors and actors, always prioritizing the script and character over remuneration. His enduring passion for acting, embodied in his words, “I can never feel tired of acting,” made him a true pillar of Tamil cinema.

Since his passing, tributes have poured in from across the film industry, with figures like Rajinikanth, Karthi, Vijay Sethupathi, and director Suresh Krissna remembering him fondly for his talent and legacy. His contributions to Tamil cinema, television, and theater will forever be remembered.
