Kamal Haasan's cult classic film Gunaa, originally released in 1991, is making its way back to theatres on Friday, November 29, for a special re-release. Directed by Santhana Bharathi and co-written by Sab John, Gunaa tells the story of a psychiatric patient, played by Kamal Haasan, who kidnaps an heiress (Roshini) believing her to be the reincarnation of the goddess Abhirami. The film, which also features Rekha in a prominent role, struggled at the box office upon its initial release but slowly gained a cult following due to its powerful performances, emotional depth, and the unforgettable music composed by Ilaiyaraaja.
The film’s re-release was originally planned for June but faced delays due to legal issues. With those obstacles now resolved, Gunaa will be screened in select theatres across Tamil Nadu, giving a new generation of audiences the opportunity to experience this cinematic gem on the big screen.
One of the standout features of Gunaa is its music, especially the iconic song ‘Kanmani Anbodu,’ which remains an evergreen favorite. This track's continued popularity was further boosted by its inclusion in the Malayalam film Manjummel Boys earlier this year, sparking renewed interest in Gunaa and tourism to the Kodaikanal locations featured in both films, including the famous Gunaa caves (formerly known as Devil's Kitchen).
Although the film had an average run at the box office during its initial release, its themes of love, obsession, and mental health, along with Kamal Haasan's compelling portrayal of a troubled soul, have ensured that Gunaa remains a significant part of Tamil cinema history.
