KS Chithra, in a heartfelt interview, shared her experiences of working with the legendary composer AR Rahman, reflecting on their first meeting before their collaboration on Roja in 1992. Chithra recalled seeing Rahman as a young boy while singing for Ilaiyaraaja and was initially shocked to see him playing music. She learned that he was Dilip Kumar, the son of RK Sekhar, a respected musician.
Chithra also elaborated on the differences in working with Rahman compared to other music directors. She explained that while with other composers, singers often hear the final version of their tracks shortly after recording, Rahman allows them the freedom to experiment with expressions and improvisations, with the final version only being revealed when the song is released. This, according to Chithra, adds an element of surprise to the process.
Further, Chithra praised Rahman as a singer, mentioning that certain songs, like Mustafa Mustafa from Kadhalan and Khwaja Mere Khwaja from Jodha Akbar, could only be imagined in his voice. She also spoke about Rahman’s deep respect for all artists, citing his efforts to credit musicians by mentioning their names on cassette and CD covers. Chithra shared how Rahman ensures that any reused portions of a musician’s work are compensated, often without the musicians even knowing, as Rahman’s office ensures fair payment.
With deep admiration, Chithra concluded by praying for Rahman and his family, hoping that they continue to be blessed for their kindness and generosity in the music industry.
