Alangu, directed by S.P. Shakthivel, is an action-thriller drama based on real incidents that occurred in the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border region. The movie features Gunanidhi in the lead role, with Malayalam actor Semban Vinod Jose also playing a pivotal character. Interestingly, a dog is also portrayed as a key character in the film, adding an emotional layer to the story.
The plot centers around Gunanidhi, who raises a dog and takes it with him to Kerala for work. In the village, an incident occurs where a dog bites a child, and Semban Vinod Jose's character, along with Sarath Appani, goes on a killing spree to eradicate all the dogs in the area. Gunanidhi's dog becomes one of the victims, and he embarks on a journey to save it, leading to a conflict with the antagonist. The film explores whether Gunanidhi succeeds in rescuing his dog, and how the dog responds to those who tried to kill it.
Gunanidhi, playing a young man from the hills, delivers a natural performance, effectively portraying his character's struggle, anger, and unconditional love for his dog. His portrayal of the character's emotional turmoil, from the frustrations of unfulfilled dreams to the intense battle to save his dog, is deeply compelling. Kali Venkatesh, playing the protector of the young characters, adds a heartwarming touch to the film with his care and affection.
Semban Vinod Jose's performance as the villain brings a chilling energy to the film, generating fear with his intimidating presence. Sri Reka, who plays the mother, delivers a strong performance, fully understanding her character's intensity. Supporting actors like Shanmugam Muthusamy, Kotravai, and Sarath Appani round out the ensemble with solid portrayals.
The film's visual effects, including scenes with elephants, dogs, and snakes, are visually impressive, particularly the graphics involving the dog. The music, composed by Ajeesh, complements the film with powerful tracks and background scores, adding intensity to the action sequences. Cinematographer Pandikumar beautifully captures the lush landscapes of the forest and the film’s characters, enhancing the realism of the story.
One area that could have been further developed is the dog's role. The film does well to focus on the relationship between humans and dogs, but a few more scenes featuring the dog could have made the connection even stronger. Overall, director S.P. Shakthivel has successfully crafted a gripping film that tells the story of survival, love, and the bond between humans and animals, all while maintaining the thrill and excitement of an action-packed narrative.
