Actor Sathyaraj has addressed the increasing trend of targeted negative reviews that have been circulating in the film industry, stating that while it is a reviewer’s right to express opinions, these reviews should not be driven by personal animosity. In a recent press interaction, Sathyaraj opened up about the impact of such reviews, particularly regarding the negative feedback for Suriya’s Kanguva.
The veteran actor pointed out that while critics are entitled to share their views, it is crucial that the focus remains on the film's content rather than becoming a platform for personal grievances. He explained, "It is the duty and right of a reviewer/journalist to share their review on a film. But sometimes there is an excessive focus on the negatives of a film, and it is visible for a recent film."
He further added, “There is a difference between sharing your likes and dislikes about a film and spreading targeted hatred. I feel that is wrong. Views about a film are personal, and there's no objection to that. But reviews should not reflect personal hate. Actors are paid for their work, and producers fund these films. You can't dislike a film just because you don't like the actor's personal life. This is condemnable."
Sathyaraj’s comments come in the wake of a demand by the Tamil Film Active Producers Association for a ban on public and fan reviews during first shows in theatres. This move follows concerns about the impact of early negative reviews on a film's reception and box office performance. Producer G. Dhananjeyan also expressed similar thoughts, highlighting the importance of constructive criticism over spreading hatred. He urged audiences to understand the difference between honest feedback and harmful negativity.
Sathyaraj’s statement sheds light on a critical issue facing the industry and calls for a more responsible approach to film reviews, one that fosters a positive environment for both filmmakers and audiences.
