In a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has raised concerns about the state’s development under the BJP-led government. Gogoi accused Sarma of focusing more on personal wealth accumulation than addressing the pressing issues facing the people of Assam.

Gogoi’s comments follow Sarma’s inclusion in a list of India's richest chief ministers, sparking controversy over the wealth disparity between political leaders and the common people. While Sarma’s wealth has been a subject of public discussion, Gogoi questioned the state’s progress in key areas such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure, despite the CM's rising financial stature.

"Only BJP’s ‘Vikas’ (development) seems to benefit Himanta Biswa Sarma, not the people of Assam," Gogoi said in a statement. He further emphasized that the state’s economic challenges, including unemployment and lack of basic infrastructure, remain largely unaddressed. The Congress leader argued that while the CM may be basking in his newfound wealth, the common people continue to face hardships.

Sarma, who has held the position of Assam CM since 2021, is known for his aggressive stance on governance and his role in the BJP’s rise in the northeast. His financial status, which has gained significant attention due to his inclusion in the list of India's wealthiest politicians, has led to increasing scrutiny from opposition leaders.

The attack from Gogoi adds to the ongoing political tension between the Congress and BJP in Assam, where both parties are vying for dominance ahead of the upcoming state elections. Gogoi's remarks have also highlighted concerns within the opposition about the growing wealth gap between politicians and the general populace, especially in regions like Assam, where the economic disparity is still significant.
