Brahmaputra River Crosses Danger Mark in Dibrugarh as Heavy Rains Lash Assam

The persistent rainfall is expected to worsen the situation, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides in hilly terrain.

Dibrugarh, Assam – In the wake of incessant rainfall over the past several days, the Brahmaputra river has crossed the danger mark in several locations, including Dibrugarh. The alarming rise in water levels has triggered serious concerns among authorities and residents alike, as the threat of flooding looms over low-lying areas.

According to officials from the Central Water Commission (CWC), the water level of the Brahmaputra river in Dibrugarh has surpassed the prescribed danger level due to continuous downpours in upper Assam and neighboring regions. The situation is being monitored closely by district authorities and state disaster management teams.

Local sources reported that several riverbanks have started eroding, and embankments in vulnerable areas are under immense pressure. The administration has already initiated precautionary measures to deal with any emergency. These include the deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, the preparation of relief camps, and the shifting of people from highly vulnerable zones.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy to very heavy rainfall over Assam and adjoining northeastern states over the next few days. The persistent rainfall is expected to worsen the situation, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides in hilly terrain.

Many parts of Dibrugarh district are already witnessing waterlogging, and agricultural fields are under threat of submersion. Local farmers have expressed concern over the damage to standing crops, especially paddy fields that are already saturated from earlier rain spells. In urban areas, poor drainage systems have exacerbated the issue, leading to traffic disruptions and water entering homes in some locations.

The state government has issued advisories urging residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone regions. School closures may be announced if the water levels continue to rise and transportation becomes unsafe. Emergency helplines have been activated, and community volunteers are working alongside officials to ensure timely response in case of flooding.

Historically, Assam faces annual flooding due to monsoon rains and the swelling of rivers such as the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. The government has been investing in embankment strengthening and early warning systems, but unpredictable weather patterns and intense rainfall continue to pose challenges.

Environmental experts have also raised concerns about climate change intensifying rainfall patterns in the northeastern region. They stress the need for better urban planning, flood management infrastructure, and long-term environmental conservation strategies to mitigate future disasters.

As the monsoon deepens and weather warnings remain in effect, authorities are urging citizens to follow official updates, stay indoors during peak rainfall, and cooperate with emergency services.
